I even read that a psychology friend of my grandfather took them to see a drag queen show. (I think he wanted to see their reaction.) Anyway, the diary talks about shortages, their victory garden, air raids, black outs, sabotage of factories by Germans, Japanese being relocated out of L.A., etc. My grandfather was a naval bomb inspector who worked with various military including the son of Captain Von Valkenburg of the USS Arizona who was killed in Pearl Harbor. My dad and uncle fought in the Pacific and Alaska. Dad didn't like to talk about the war, but when he was over there, he drew cartoons about what was happening to him. Well, we need to be prepared and start figuring out a new America before it is figured out for us.
