Was there a hidden "widowmaker" tree limb hung up in a tree above where you were working?

I was inspecting all the broken limbs down from the snow and Ice storm we had few weeks ago and i looked up at one of the trees to see where some of the limbs came from hoping it was the mulberry and not the striped maple, but i noticed from a different angle there was this broken loose big limb just laying across couple other limbs and if it gets some winds up, will probably teeter off and fall down. So ive probably got to get a ladder up there and reach it with a hook just to make sure it doesn't catch somebody unaware.

It’s interesting that you mention a “widowmaker” . Yes, there are actually two where I was working.

One is quite large and is suspended by a thick vine. It does concern me, as it’s hard to predict what direction this half a tree may go once free from the vine.

I was working on those smaller tasks that I’m more confident about. It might be a maple tree though I’m not entirely sure. But just like your situation, a storm had broken this large tree.

I hope that you will be very careful when dealing with your widowmaker. Because of your message I will be sure to do the same. Looking back, it would’ve been easy for me to rush into tackling this.

It definitely needs to be approached cautiously. I wish you all the best and a safe experience in dealing with your tree issues. Thank you for your message and for bringing my attention me to this danger.
